Inside Manteno State Hospital

Manteno State Hospital was one of two mental hospitals in Kankakee County. It has been the subject of several television shows and numerous investigations both professional and amateur. In 1939, the hospital was the scene of the “Manteno Madness,” a typhoid epidemic that resulted in the deaths of 47 patients and staff. Closed for decades, the hospital has been slowly divided up and sold off, until only a few of its buildings remain abandoned.
