Paranormal 101: Bigfoot & Wildmen

In this monthly segment, I will provide a list of books I think anyone interested in folklore, ghost stories, the unusual & the paranormal would enjoy. Most of these can be found on Amazon.com (often at discounted rates) or at your local library. Each list of books will be arranged by topic and will be accompanied by a short description highlighting some themes and commonalities. Enjoy!

No discussion of North American legends and lore would be complete without a discussion of Bigfoot. This cryptid, or something like it, has been spotted all over the continent for hundreds of years. Even Illinois has a wealth of Sasquatch sightings. In the face of this deluge of encounters, bolstered by the occasional hair or footprint, many brave souls have attempted to capture some definitive proof of this elusive creature. Is it real? Is it a myth? The above books represent a good cross section of the latest literature on the subject.

An Excerpt from Chasing Shadows: Investigating the Paranormal in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa

Chasing Shadows by Larry Wilson is a great book with detailed accounts of paranormal investigations across three states. The chapters on places outside of Illinois are really hair-raising, but it’s the stuff on Graveyard X, Williamsburg Hill, and the bigfoot and UFO sightings at Cumberland Sugar Creek Cemetery that you will definitely want to check out. In this excerpt, the author has a close encounter with a strange object hovering over a rural Illinois cemetery.

“Carl’s directions were very accurate and Chris and I found the cemetery without any problem. However, because we came straight from the college, we did not have our paranormal investigating equipment with us. More importantly, we did not have a flashlight either. The moon that night was a waning crescent, which is only about one sixth of a moon. The sky was clear for the most part but the cemetery was very dark. We arrived a few minutes before 10:00pm. Once we got out of the car and walked a short distance, our eyes seemed to adjust to the darkness and we could make out objects or obstacles such as tombstones that were in our paths without difficulty.

Just a few minutes later, I glanced up towards the sky and noticed an object about the size of a very bright star heading west to east. I pointed out the light to Chris and asked if he thought it may be a satellite. Neither of us was sure as to what it was, but it did not have flashing lights like a normal aircraft would. I turned away for a moment to check out the cemetery because I thought I saw something moving. No sooner had I looked away when, Chris yelled, “Hey, the light vanished!” I looked up and, sure enough, it was gone.

A few moments later, we saw another, similar light coming from the southeast and heading in a northeasterly direction. A few seconds after that, we saw another light coming from the south and heading north. This time, I kept my eyes focused on the light. What I noticed was that both of the lights seemed to be headed on an upwards trajectory. As I watched, the lights became fainter and fainter. Then it hit me: the lights were not extinguishing; they were heading so high into the atmosphere that they were disappearing from sight. I do not know of any military or commercial aircraft that travels that high, so I was completely baffled as to what we were watching.

After the lights disappeared, we scanned the sky for a few more minutes but did not see anything else unusual. Our focus returned to the cemetery and our mission of trying to figure out where the paranormal group from Springfield would have been sitting and where the rocks and dirt clods that they were pelted with may have come from…” From page 175

Interview with Stan Courtney, Bigfoot Researcher

Stan Courtney has had an interest in Bigfoot/Sasquatch since 1959, and had his first possible encounter near Springfield, Oregon in 1967. Stan has been a member of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization since 2004 and has interviewed 250 Bigfoot witnesses and posted over 160 reports on the BFRO website. He has also traveled to the 48 contiguous states, recording and researching sighting locations, given talks on the topic of “Bigfoot In Illinois” to various groups throughout the state of Illinois, and has been a guest on numerous radio shows.

When did you first become interested in pursuing Bigfoot sightings in Illinois? Did you have your own encounter with this legendary beast, or has this just been a subject that has fascinated you from an early age?

Although I have lived in Illinois since 1974 I was unaware of the long history of Sasquatch activity within Illinois until the advent of both the internet and the many TV documentaries. Being raised in the Pacific Northwest I have always had an intense in the subject. I had a brief sighting in July of 2005 near Seneca, Illinois.

Illinois isn’t generally known to be a hot spot for Bigfoot sightings, yet as you have documented, there have been hundreds if not thousands of sightings of “wildmen” in Illinois over the past two centuries. Why do you think Illinois “gets no respect” in this area of research?

As I recently wrote on the topic of “Illinois Gets No Respect” Illinois is not the first location to come to mind when you hear the word “Bigfoot”. Perhaps the reasons for this are that the public has the impression that these animals only live in the wilderness, high in the mountains and shun any contact with humans. By looking at the national databases it is soon realized that this is not the case, as there are reports in most of Illinois’ Counties. I have had a slow progression of understanding about what these animals are, where they live, and how they act. I now believe that there is probably a resident group of Sasquatch that passes through occasionally along most of the wooded creeks of Illinois. Illinois has over 87,000 miles of streams and rivers. Most of these are wooded and loaded with White-tailed Deer. So contrary to what the casual observer thinks, Illinois has a large amount of favorable habitat for these animals to live, eat and reproduce.

As preciously mentioned, you have meticulously documented hundreds of sightings and newspaper reports of Bigfoot sightings all over the state. Which of these incidents do you believe provides the most compelling evidence for the existence of such a creature?
