“He said he got the chills suddenly, like the temperature dropped to below zero,” Greg explained. Davin appeared pasty and pale, but that wasn’t necessarily out of character.

“Maybe this has something to do with that corpse we found earlier,” Mike wondered aloud.

“Davin gets sick twenty times a week and this time it’s due to supernatural causes?” Emmer snapped. “Do you realize how crazy that sounds?”

“I’m just throwing out possibilities,” Mike defensively retorted.

Davin’s teeth chattered and he visibly shook. “I think I need to go home, guys,” he stuttered. “Something isn’t right here.”

“Oh great,” Emmer said. “Now he thinks he’s cursed too.”

“Wait a minute,” Greg interrupted. “Do you hear something?”

The Fallen fell silent. Oddly, the usual background noises―birds, crickets, cicadas, etc.―were absent. The wind blowing through the nearby trees was the only audible sound, until, very faintly at first, an electric hum pierced the air. The clamor did not seem to come from any easily discernable direction.

“Okay, now that’s creepy,” Emmer admitted.

“I’m beginning to worry that we’re not going to be transported to Hell,” Emmer said sarcastically from the backseat.

“It’s too bad we couldn’t bring Casey,” Greg lamented, referring to the feral coydog The Fallen had adopted a few months earlier. “She would know if there were any Hell hounds lurking around here.”

Mike sighed deeply as the forest became denser and an overgrown railroad bridge came into view in the Corolla’s headlights. It was obvious from first glance that this bridge hadn’t been in use for a long time. The steel rails of the railroad tracks, if they were still there, were hidden under a layer of dirt and weeds. Small bushes and saplings grew on top of the bridge.

Suddenly, as they slowly crept through the tunnel, a sharp BANG pierced the air and Mike briefly lost control of the vehicle. “Crowley’s ass!” he swore. “I think we blew a tire!” He guided the Toyota out of the tunnel and pulled to the side of the road.

Cutting the ignition, Mike stepped out of the car along with his four friends, who each examined one of the four tires using small electric torches. After a moment, they discovered that it was the rear, passenger side tire that had blown.

“Well, we’re screwed now,” Emmer joked. “We’ll never get to Hell!”

Flashback: Axeman’s Bridge

As the group neared the path in the woods, she felt a subtle shift in the atmosphere. Suddenly, a house stood about fifty yards past the tree line, and the bridge, which had been collapsed into the creek moments earlier, appeared to be structurally sound. Aurelia couldn’t contain her feelings any longer.

“Did anyone notice that house appear over there?” she asked.

“Hasn’t it been there the entire time?” Davin replied.

“Uh, no.”

Mike, Greg, and Emmer all threw Aurelia puzzled looks, but before she could respond, the group heard blood-curdling screams coming from the dreary, white house. The Fallen bolted into action. Greg readied his cane while the quintet plowed off the road and into the pristine snow of the timber.

Suddenly, a woman burst from the screen door. “He’s going to kill my babies!” she yelled frantically.

In what must have been minutes—but seemed like seconds—The Fallen closed the distance between them and the panicked woman. She immediately collapsed into Davin’s arms. “Help!” she gasped. “He’s going to kill them!” Her face was sweaty and smeared with grease, and her hair was tangled.

Mike only had to nod, and Greg and Aurelia were at his side. Mike cursed. “What the hell is going on?”

Mike’s assurances hadn’t fazed the woman, because her eyes were still filled with fear and she held up her hands as if to fend off an attack. “What do you want?” she pleaded. “I don’t have anything! I just sleeping here!”

“It’s alright,” Aurelia said in something that vaguely resembled a soothing tone. “We’re not going to hurt you.”

“I think you scared us just as much as we scared you!” Greg chuckled, but no one else indulged in his levity.

“Who is the man in black?” Mike demanded.

The woman’s eyes darted from Mike to Greg to Aurelia, then back again. “I sees him sometimes at night. In the forest.” She coughed and wheezed. I sees his glowing eyes through the trees. He’s a bad spirit. He dresses all in black, just like you.”

“Well, unlike this thing, I’m alive,” Mike muttered. “And how long have you been living here? It’s freezing out here.”

“I been here since the fall,” the woman said, timidly. “Not any colder than anywhere else.”

“Well I guess that makes sense,” Greg said. He pulled Mike aside for a moment. “Listen, why don’t we go check out that cemetery, eh? There’s obviously no werewolf here.”

“You goin’ to the cemetery?” the woman interjected.

Flashback: Blood’s Point

Upon clearing the bridge, Mike jerked the steering wheel sharply to the right and braked. The Toyota’s tires spit gravel and it lurched to one side on the embankment along the side of the road. If they hadn’t been wearing seatbelts, Mike and Greg might have wound up in their friend’s laps.

The van raced ahead into the night, but displayed break lights after less than fifty yards and made a tight u-turn. Mike carefully guided his car back onto the road, and the two vehicles sat facing each other menacingly.

“Did anyone get the license plate?” Emmer asked between gasps for breath.

“I think we have bigger things to worry about,” Mike said as the van’s tires squealed and it began to barrel toward the four investigators.

Then, without warning, a misty form materialized in front of the van. Its driver must have been startled by whatever had just appeared, because he or she slammed on the brakes and swerved into the opposite lane. Unfortunately for is occupants, but fortunately for The Fallen, the vehicle spun out of control and rolled off the road in a sickening tangle of steel and aluminum, before coming to a rest in the grassy trench along the border of a corn field.

The mist in the road dissipated as quickly as it had congealed.
