Spotlight: Moon Point Cemetery

Moon Point Cemetery is an old graveyard located just south of Streator in Livingston County. Like other rural graveyards, it became an object of folklore in the late 1960s and ‘70s when local teens, looking for a place to ‘hang out’ after dark, picked this isolated location to drink, spin yarns, and play pranks on one another. Moon’s Point got its name from Jacob Moon who, along with his daughter and three sons, was the first to settle the area. Locals believe the cemetery is haunted by the ghost of a “hatchet lady.” This lady went insane, the story goes, after either her son or daughter died, and every full moon, her spirit is seen stalking the cemetery, hatchet in hand. Another tale associated with Moon Point concerns an abandoned house—previously owned by a witch, of course—that is also rumored to be haunted. Many tales of séances and illicit trespasses have come from that location. The remoteness of the cemetery is accentuated by the fact that a railroad track bisects the road leading to it. It is said that anyone who is caught in the cemetery while a train passes will be trapped there. That much is true. According to legend, however, your car will also die and not be able to restart until after the train has gone.

The group stepped inside the rusted gates and waited while Mike scanned the area with the gaze of an experienced investigator. “There.” He pointed at an empty patch of grass in the middle of the cemetery. “Aura, do your thing. Davin, I want you to help her.”

Aurelia did what she was instructed, but Davin couldn’t tear his eyes away from Emily, who wore a short, plaid skirt and a charcoal-colored blouse that was matted with sweat. She stood and smiled at him in a way that no one else could read.

Mike threw Davin an angry glance, and his friend finally stumbled after Aurelia. Emily followed.

“I don’t get it,” Greg said when the three were several yards away. “What are we doing here? You never mentioned this place might be a candidate for the location of the astral gate.”

Mike grinned. “I know,” he said quietly. “We’ll see what happens in a few minutes. Maybe nothing. Hopefully something.”

“I’ll hold my breath and cross my fingers,” Emmer said sarcastically.

Deep inside the cemetery, Aurelia pulled a dark blue pouch out of her pocket. She tore it open and scooped out a handful of salt. Inspecting Emily’s face for any reaction, she began sprinkling it into the grass until she produced a circle that was invisible to the naked eye. She then pulled five quartz crystals out of her pocket and placed them at even intervals around the circumference of the circle. She bowed her head and began muttering in Latin.

Mike dug into the pockets of his trench coat and produced a small pair of binoculars. He scanned the woods, which luckily were barren of underbrush since most of the weeds were dead, and saw something moving in the newly fallen leaves.

“What is it?” Emmer asked.

“I don’t know,” Mike replied. “There’s something moving around.”

“Let’s check it out,” Greg said as he began moving in the direction of the sound.

Mike tried to protest, but his friends left him standing alone as they walked toward the woods. He shook his head and followed.

Greg entered the hinterlands of the forest and then stopped dead in his tracks. He was so startled by what he saw that he nearly fell over backwards and took Emmer with him.
Aurelia shoved her way past the two. A few yards ahead, a mangy dog growled and whined menacingly, but appeared to be stuck. The dog was covered by patchy, dark gray hair and seemed malnourished.

“What is that thing?” Emily asked, keeping herself strategically behind Davin.

A deputy, with “Johnson” etched onto his nameplate, approached the trio. “None of these kids have any identification on them,” he informed the sheriff. “We’re going to have to throw the girl in a cell. We can’t get her to stop resisting.”

The sheriff turned to Mike and Davin. “How about it?” he asked. “You’ve got ten seconds to tell me your names.”

“I told you already,” Mike said. “My name is John Smith.”

“What were you doing at Aux Sable Cemetery?”

“Bird watching.”

“You better wipe that smirk off your face or I’ll do it for you,” the sheriff growled.

Just then, the officer who had gone into a room to interrogate Greg burst into the hallway, wiping his eyes. His arms shook.

“Bundy, are you crying?” the sheriff yelled.

“No… I… just have something in my eye,” the officer replied, his voice choked.
