Odd Temperature Anomaly at Anderson Cemetery

Chasing Shadows by Larry WilsonFrom Chasing Shadows by Larry Wilson.

That October, I returned to “Graveyard X” with a local central Illinois paranormal investigator named Ed Osborne. Ed is very knowledgeable and a good friend who I have a great deal of respect for. It was the Wednesday night before Halloween, and it was a cool (but not cold) evening. Ed and I had been in the cemetery for close to an hour taking pictures and checking EMF and temperature readings. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary, and it was about 7:30pm.

The curfew for the cemetery is 8:00pm, and it is patrolled by the county sheriff’s department, so Ed and I decided to make a final pass through the cemetery and then leave by curfew. I scanned the cemetery for temperature using my laser-pointed digital thermometer. The average temperature that night was 44 degrees. Everywhere I scanned, the temperature read 44 degrees Fahrenheit, that is, until I passed by the cement bench.

As I passed by the bench, the temperature began to drop. First the temperature dropped below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, then it dropped below 30 degrees, then it dropped below 20 degrees. The temperature continued to drop steadily until it finally reached a low of minus 16 degrees below zero. Ed and I could not believe what we were seeing, so to make sure that there was not some type of malfunction, and to make sure that the thermometer was set to Fahrenheit and not Celsius, I shut it off and then turned it back on. It was definitely set to Fahrenheit.

Exploring Anderson Cemetery (Graveyard X)

Chasing Shadows by Larry WilsonFrom Chasing Shadows by Larry Wilson.

Located not far from the small town of Palmer, Illinois is one of the most mysterious locations in Illinois, widely discussed by ghost hunters and paranormal investigators alike: Anderson Cemetery, or as many prefer to call it, “Graveyard X.”

For years, there have been tales of unexplained lights in the cemetery, and some of these lights, I have been told, have been recorded on video both during the daytime and at night. Some tell stories of hearing the sounds and voices of small children playing in the cemetery when no homes are located nearby to account for these sounds. Apparitions appear in photos and digital thermometers record icy cold spots with no scientific or logical explanations for the temperature fluctuations. I have experienced the extreme temperature fluctuations myself, which I will explain shortly.

In order to keep the location from others, various books and Internet postings have labeled it “Graveyard X,” leading to the perception that Anderson Cemetery is some kind of top-secret place. All the stories and legends about the “mysterious Graveyard X,” however, piqued my interest enough to compel me to conduct my own investigation at this location.

My first challenge was finding the allusive “Graveyard X,” because all I knew about the whereabouts of this mysterious location was that it was located in a secluded place in rural central Illinois. It seemed that other ghost hunters who had investigated Anderson Cemetery were not anxious to reveal its location. I do not think the reason for this secrecy was to prevent other legitimate paranormal investigators from investigating the cemetery, but to prevent those who may only be looking for a thrill and to possibly destroy, desecrate or litter the site.

As it turns out, Anderson Cemetery, or “Graveyard X,” is located in rural Christian County only 9.5 miles from my home in Taylorville. So there it was, right under my nose all the time and I did not even know it. Oh well, so much for the intuition of a former private investigator!

Interview with Becky Guymon of IMPS

Becky Guymon, also known as Zitania, was born and raised in Central Illinois. She is a professional Genealogist and has been doing family history research for 20 years. After having her first paranormal experience at the age of 8, she has always been interested in the paranormal, and has been doing paranormal investigations for the last six years. Becky is currently working on her first book, which blends both the Genealogical, Historical, and Paranormal stories of Campground Cemetery in Mattoon. Becky is available to speak at events and can be contacted at becky.imps@gmail.com.

Tell our readers a little bit about your team and what your team’s approach is to paranormal investigation.

IMPS was formed by a group of close friends who had similar interests in the paranormal. While the group does do paranormal investigations, its main goal was to raise awareness of the paranormal and metaphysical fields (tarot, crystals, etc.) Our team is made up of “normal everyday” people ranging from business professionals to nurses and everything in between. Our team takes a very caring and concerned approach when it comes to our paranormal investigations. Our goal is to provide answers for our client and to put their mind at ease. We always try to find a logical explanation for experiences and leave our clients comforted in knowing that their home or business is safe and secure. Our team spends a lot of time researching the history of our locations. We have a strong Genealogy background and we use those skills in order to provide our client with a detailed history of the location.

Why did you decide to start the Illinois Metaphysical & Paranormal Society in 2008? Was it a particular event that got you involved in paranormal investigation, or had you thought about creating your own team for a while?

I have been interested in the paranormal and metaphysical fields since I was a young child. I had some experiences at a young age that lead me to be a believer in the paranormal and I have always wanted to learn more about the field. I met someone from the Chicago area who was a paranormal investigator and he became a good friend and mentor. I joined his team and drove to Chicago area for investigations a few times a year. However, the drive was a bit tedious so I began exploring the option of creating my own team in the Central Illinois area. As I started asking my peers I quickly found several people who were interested in forming the Illinois Metaphysical and Paranormal Society, and so it began.

Tell our readers a bit about the former Charleston Community Memorial Hospital. Why do you think it is haunted and what kind of things have people experienced there?

The former Charleston Community Memorial Hospital is a truly wonderful building. Four of our team members have worked, or currently work, at organizations that have offices inside the building. During my three years in the building I witnessed several strange occurrences as did my co-workers. The position that I had required that I spend a lot of afterhours time in the office. My co-worker and I often stayed until 7 or 8 in the evening and that is often when we would notice the strange events. Some of the events included lights turning on and off in the restrooms, restroom water turning on without anyone near it, stall doors opening and shutting.

On several occasions, workers in the building would report standing by the bulletin boards or water fountains and feeling like someone, a large man, was standing behind them. When they would turn around there was no one there. We named this spirit John. Although a psychic later told us that she believes the spirits name is David and that he used to work in the hospital. We have not been able to confirm this relation thru our research as of yet.

Other experiences in the building include objects being moved, knocking on walls, scratching sounds on doors, shadows, and voices.

Tony Hubert Retires from Paranormal Investigation

Tony Hubert, a Kankakee native and head of the Illinois Paranormal Society, has announced his resignation from paranormal investigation and will hand over future cases to IPS members Tonya and Emery.

Tony Hubert“I have been investigating the Paranormal and Unexplained since 1997,” he said in a post on his website. “I was investigating before any ghost hunting was popular and on TV. It has been a long 16 years. That is more than half of my life. I have experienced many things in those years, most of which I still cannot explain. Over the last handful of years, my interest and desire to investigate have declined.”

He said his desire to investigate has declined, “Mainly due to these fly by night groups that are popping up all over. Also, these other so called “groups” who investigate the same locations over and over again, tell the public that these places are haunted when in fact they aren’t, treat this field as a competition instead of what its really meant for – educating and helping the public, and lastly, lost family time. I have spent many an evening away from my family and it hasn’t been fair to them.”

Tony has created an event management and promotion company called Neuhub Entertainment, and plans to attend Parkland College for a degree in respiratory therapy.

NIPT Encounters the Ghost of Amy

By Tony Episcopo of Northern Illinois Paranormal Team

In July of 2011, Northern Illinois Paranormal Team lead investigators, Tony and Dave, were requested to an “Undisclosed” location in Aurora Illinois. As the team arrived, we started setting up our equipment for our investigation. It has been said that people who work at this location feel uncomfortable and hear “strange noises.” One person who we interviewed stated that as he was eating his lunch, he felt as if hundreds of people were watching him eat. The same person told us he would hear a door slam when in fact nobody else was in the building. “Something just don’t feel right,” he stated.

In a series of pictures taken during the investigation, an orb appears floating near a doll used to attract the ghost of “Amy.”

As we cleared out the area, our investigation began. Not knowing what we were getting ourselves into, we set up everything: video, audio recorders, cameras, etc. The only two people were in the building were us. You can say we were in “Lock down,” and as soon as we set up our equipment things started to happen. The first strange event was a pounding that occurred a couple times, and would respond to Dave asking if someone was here could they pound on the wall. The very next thing was as we were in the basement of this building we heard footsteps as if someone was walking directly above us, so we immediately ran upstairs and check the first floor to find it empty.

Next we started to do some EVP sessions and the EVPs we caught were just amazing. We captured a little girl’s voice. Of course we didn’t notice what we had captured until later upon our review. Upon reviewing our evidence this is what N.I.P.T. Caught. During an EVP session we asked if someone could give us a name. A few seconds later, we captured a little girl’s voice who says, “Its Amy.”  Upon reviewing our pictures we captured  what we believe is Amy reaching over to a chair grabbing Dave’s camera.
