  • Legends and Lore CD ROMPublished between 2007 and 2010, with two additional issues in 2012, the Legends and Lore of Illinois was a monthly newsletter that sought to recapture the fun of learning about local legends and ghostlore, as well as the thrill of visiting allegedly haunted places.
  • Each issue of the Legends and Lore of Illinois focused on a unique location and contained a factual write up, a story set at the location involving the adventures of The Fallen (an elite team of paranormal investigators), personal experiences, trivia, and letters from the reader.
  • This collection consists of 49 individual issues from the archives of the Legends and Lore of Illinois, with over 300 accompanying color photos.
  • Inside, you will find the history, ghost stories, and folklore of popular locations such as Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, Resurrection Cemetery and Archer Avenue, Manteno State Hospital, Lakey’s Creek, and the Peoria State Hospital, plus local haunts such as Ashmore Estates, Chanute Air Force Base, Vishnu Springs, and Peck Cemetery.

Learn the real stories behind the legends: misconceptions and misinformation about these places and more are tackled head on. This unique look at Illinois ghostlore is presented in a fun, entertaining way that sheds light on the dark recesses of your imagination.

“He said he got the chills suddenly, like the temperature dropped to below zero,” Greg explained. Davin appeared pasty and pale, but that wasn’t necessarily out of character.

“Maybe this has something to do with that corpse we found earlier,” Mike wondered aloud.

“Davin gets sick twenty times a week and this time it’s due to supernatural causes?” Emmer snapped. “Do you realize how crazy that sounds?”

“I’m just throwing out possibilities,” Mike defensively retorted.

Davin’s teeth chattered and he visibly shook. “I think I need to go home, guys,” he stuttered. “Something isn’t right here.”

“Oh great,” Emmer said. “Now he thinks he’s cursed too.”

“Wait a minute,” Greg interrupted. “Do you hear something?”

The Fallen fell silent. Oddly, the usual background noises―birds, crickets, cicadas, etc.―were absent. The wind blowing through the nearby trees was the only audible sound, until, very faintly at first, an electric hum pierced the air. The clamor did not seem to come from any easily discernable direction.

“Okay, now that’s creepy,” Emmer admitted.

“I’m beginning to worry that we’re not going to be transported to Hell,” Emmer said sarcastically from the backseat.

“It’s too bad we couldn’t bring Casey,” Greg lamented, referring to the feral coydog The Fallen had adopted a few months earlier. “She would know if there were any Hell hounds lurking around here.”

Mike sighed deeply as the forest became denser and an overgrown railroad bridge came into view in the Corolla’s headlights. It was obvious from first glance that this bridge hadn’t been in use for a long time. The steel rails of the railroad tracks, if they were still there, were hidden under a layer of dirt and weeds. Small bushes and saplings grew on top of the bridge.

Suddenly, as they slowly crept through the tunnel, a sharp BANG pierced the air and Mike briefly lost control of the vehicle. “Crowley’s ass!” he swore. “I think we blew a tire!” He guided the Toyota out of the tunnel and pulled to the side of the road.

Cutting the ignition, Mike stepped out of the car along with his four friends, who each examined one of the four tires using small electric torches. After a moment, they discovered that it was the rear, passenger side tire that had blown.

“Well, we’re screwed now,” Emmer joked. “We’ll never get to Hell!”

Mike’s assurances hadn’t fazed the woman, because her eyes were still filled with fear and she held up her hands as if to fend off an attack. “What do you want?” she pleaded. “I don’t have anything! I just sleeping here!”

“It’s alright,” Aurelia said in something that vaguely resembled a soothing tone. “We’re not going to hurt you.”

“I think you scared us just as much as we scared you!” Greg chuckled, but no one else indulged in his levity.

“Who is the man in black?” Mike demanded.

The woman’s eyes darted from Mike to Greg to Aurelia, then back again. “I sees him sometimes at night. In the forest.” She coughed and wheezed. I sees his glowing eyes through the trees. He’s a bad spirit. He dresses all in black, just like you.”

“Well, unlike this thing, I’m alive,” Mike muttered. “And how long have you been living here? It’s freezing out here.”

“I been here since the fall,” the woman said, timidly. “Not any colder than anywhere else.”

“Well I guess that makes sense,” Greg said. He pulled Mike aside for a moment. “Listen, why don’t we go check out that cemetery, eh? There’s obviously no werewolf here.”

“You goin’ to the cemetery?” the woman interjected.

Flashback: Starved Rock State Park

Click here to order the entire issue!

A full moon illuminated the thin layer of snow that coated the rocks, valleys, and crags of Starved Rock State Park, causing a bluish hue to be reflected off the naked and dormant branches of the deciduous forest. Despite recent snowfall, the temperature was crisp but bearable. The air was perfectly still. Heavy footsteps tromped through the frozen underbrush without regard for the noise—the travelers moved like they were on a mission and were far enough from the nearest dwelling to care.

Misa, a gangly young woman dressed in a flowing, knee-length coat, led the way. She moved swiftly but awkwardly; dodging and weaving through the trees like she was always off balance. Her appearance was deceptive, however, because she was neither helpless nor directionless. Her senses were honed for navigating in the dark. She heard the rustle of the owls in the trees and smelled the strangers who had tracked her friends since they left their car.

Aurelia was also keenly aware of their pursuers, but not through any of her five senses. She felt their power—their rage. The feeling soaked into her bones, and it got stronger the closer they came to the cliff.

Mike, Greg, Davin, and Emmer were oblivious. They moved with caution, instinctively locating sure footing on the snow-covered forest floor. Still, they lagged several yards behind Misa and Aurelia.

“Are you absolutely sure this plan is going to work?” Greg asked between heavy breaths. Fog puffed from his mouth.
